세계 최대 인터넷 기업인 구글(Google)의 입사 면접시험 문제는 기발할 뿐 아니라 대답하기 어렵기로 유명하다. 발상의 전환과 논리적 사고력을 동시에 요구하면서 실전적인 문제 해결 능력까지 테스트하기 때문이다. 미국의 고용 컨설팅 업체인 시애틀 인터뷰 코치(Seattle Interview Coach)는 최근 구글 면접시험 응시자들을 통해 파악한 면접시험 문제 140개를 발굴해 공개했다.

이 문제들은 예측하기 힘든 변화의 상황에서 창의적 해결책을 제시할 줄 아는 인재를 찾는 데 주안점을 두고 있다. 입사 동기나 자신의 장단점, 포부 등을 묻는 평범한 질문보다는 기발하고 때론 황당하기까지 한 질문이 많다. 논리적이면서도 때로는 '상자 밖'에서 생각할 수 있는 진정한 '구글러(Googler)'를 찾아내려는 것이다. 구글은 또한 제대로 된 질문을 할 줄 아는 인재도 중요시한다. 응시자가 때로는 면접관에게 역으로 질문을 던져야 한다는 얘기다.

실제 면접시험에서 이런 질문을 받는다면 얼마나 당황스러울까. 그러나 최근엔 국내에서도 일부 컨설팅 회사와 대기업들이 구글과 유사한 방식으로 면접시험을 치르고 있다. 요즘 세상이 원하는 인재상이 어떤지를 알기 위해 구글이 출제한 시험문제들을 살펴보기로 하자. 구글의 면접시험 문제는 크게 4가지 유형이다.

■발상의 전환

①옷장에 셔츠가 가득 차 있는데, 원하는 셔츠를 찾기 힘들다. 쉽게 찾기 위한 당신만의 정리법은?

②건물에 엘리베이터가 한 대뿐이라면 이를 어떻게 디자인하겠는가? 2대라면?

③A지점에서 B지점으로 가야 한다. 그런데 도착할 수 있을지도 확실치 않다. 어떻게 하겠는가?

이들 질문의 의도는 정답을 원하는 게 아니다. 지원자가 기존의 틀에서 벗어나 얼마나 자유롭게 사고하고, 혁신적 아이디어를 낼 수 있는지를 알아보려는 것이다. '내 의견이 곧 답'이라는 자세로 생각을 자유롭게 표현하면 된다.

■논리적 사고력

①3시15분에 시침과 분침이 만들어내는 각도는?

②미국 대학의 4학년 학생 중 취업 후에 졸업하는 학생은 몇 명인가?

③인터넷 사이트 방문자가 배너 광고를 한번 클릭하면 광고회사는 10센트를 번다. 방문자의 20%만 클릭을 한다. 20달러를 벌려면 몇 명이 방문해야 하나?

수리적 계산 및 논리적 추론 능력을 보는 질문이다. 정보가 부족한 상황에서 지원자가 어떻게 대응하는지도 살펴본다. ①번의 답은 7.5도. ②번 질문은 자신이 졸업한 대학을 사례로 학생 숫자를 추정한 뒤 전체 대학 수에 곱하는 것이 한 방법이다. ③번의 경우 10센트를 벌려면 5명, 그 200배인 20달러를 벌려면 1000명이 방문해야 한다.

■상황에 따른 문제 해결

①100명의 부부가 사는 마을에서 모든 남편은 바람을 피운다. 부인들은 남의 남편이 바람피우는 것은 알지만, 내 남편이 바람피우는 건 모른다. 부인이 남편 바람피운 것을 증명하면 남편을 죽여야 한다. 이 규칙은 누구도 어기지 못한다. 어느 날 이 마을의 여왕이 이 마을 남편 중 최소한 1명은 바람을 피운다는 사실을 공표했다. 어떤 일이 벌어질까?

②A·B·C·D 4명이 밤에 다리를 건너는데, 각각 1·2·5·10분씩 걸린다. 동시에 두 사람만 건널 수 있고, 손전등이 반드시 필요하다. 손전등 한 개만 갖고 4명이 17분 안에 다 건너갈 방법은?


상황에 대한 판단력과 논리적인 해결 능력을 보기 위한 질문으로, 비정형적 상황이 발생했을 때 어떤 논리로 대응해 나가는지를 테스트한다. 문제 해결 과정이 평가의 초점이다. ①번 답은 '이 마을의 남편들이 결국 모두 죽는다'이다. ②번 답은 A, B가 같이 건넌 뒤(2분), A가 손전등을 갖고 돌아와서(1분), C, D가 함께 건너고(10분), B가 돌아온 뒤(2분), A, B가 함께 건넌다(2분) 총 17분이다.

■업무지식과 비전
